Chimney Repair

When it comes to preserving the character and charm of older homes, few features are as iconic and enduring as a slate roof and a well-built chimney. At NJW Renovations Unlimited, we specialize in restoring a home’s timeless elements to their former glory while ensuring they stand the test of time. Let’s explore how our slate roof and chimney repair services tie seamlessly into the broader art of home restoration.

The Beauty and Durability of Slate Roofs

Slate roofs have been a hallmark of classic architecture for centuries. Known for their stunning appearance and remarkable longevity, they can last 75 to 100 years or more with proper care. However, even the most durable materials require maintenance to combat the effects of time and weather in the Columbus area. Cracked or missing slate tiles, damaged flashing, and worn underlayment can compromise the roof’s integrity, leading to leaks and structural issues.

Our Approach to Slate Roof Repairs:

restoration

· Assessment and Planning: We carefully inspect your roof to identify problem areas and develop a restoration plan tailored to your home’s unique needs.

· Expert Repairs: Our skilled team replaces damaged tiles with matching slate, ensuring a seamless look. We also address flashing, underlayment, and other components to reinforce the roof’s durability.

· Preservation Focus: Our priority is to maintain the original aesthetic while improving functionality, preserving your home’s historical integrity.

Chimney Restoration: Blending Form and Function

Chimneys are not just functional; they’re architectural statements that enhance a home’s character. Over time, mortar can deteriorate, bricks may loosen, and the chimney’s structural stability can be compromised. Left unaddressed, these issues can lead to water infiltration and safety hazards.

Our Chimney Repair Services Include:

· Tuckpointing: Replacing deteriorated mortar with fresh, matching material to restore both strength and appearance.

· Brick Replacement: Repairing or replacing damaged bricks to maintain structural integrity.

· Crown Repair and Waterproofing: Addressing cracks in the chimney crown and applying protective coatings to prevent future water damage.

Slate Roofs and Chimneys in Home Restoration

At NJW Renovations Unlimited, we view slate roofs and chimneys as integral parts of a home’s story. Restoring these elements is about more than functionality; it’s about honoring the craftsmanship and vision of the past while preparing your home for the future. Our restoration efforts are designed to complement your home’s architecture, whether you’re preserving a historic central Ohio property or enhancing a classic aesthetic.

Preserving the Details That Belong to the Home

Before and After Roof Restoration

Historic exterior restoration often extends beyond the roof and chimney. Gutters, trim, soffits, corbels, and other architectural details all contribute to the character of an older home, and deciding how to repair them can make a significant difference in preserving its original design.

Gutters, roof, and chimney restoration

On this project, the home featured built-in gutters, an original detail that had remained even though the roof itself had been replaced by a previous owner. While built-in gutters can be removed and replaced with standard aluminum gutters to reduce costs, maintaining them was the appropriate choice for this home and its architecture.

To properly rebuild the built-in gutters, the first three rows of shingles were removed so a rubber membrane could extend underneath them, helping protect the wood roof from water. New drain inserts were installed and connected to the existing downspouts, and matching shingles were installed afterward. The chimney was reflashed as needed, while sections of rubber roofing were also added to the front eyebrow roof and the flat roofs above the bay windows to provide additional protection from the elements.

The restoration also addressed the details surrounding the roofline. Damaged trim, crown molding, soffits, and corbels were replaced, followed by stucco and painting to complete the work.

Taken individually, these may seem like small exterior details. Together, they help preserve the craftsmanship and architectural character that make an older home distinctive. Rather than replacing original features with easier modern alternatives, the goal with historical homes is to make the necessary repairs in a way that remain true to how the home was originally built.
