FEATURED PROJECT:

THE CIRCUS HOUSE

The Circus House Renovation & Restoration

Whole Home Renovation in Columbus, Ohio’s Victorian Village
Project Completed in 2022

In 2020, NJW Renovations Unlimited gladly took on the whole home renovation and restoration of The Circus House nestled in Columbus, Ohio’s Victorian Village. As a home renovation company, this was the project of a lifetime!

The Circus House Before and After Renovation Pictures

Partnering with homeowners Paige Henry of Riegel Financial and her husband Jason Henry, along with designer Michael Nielsen of Nielsen Design Studios, we meticulously restored the 1895 home to its original splendor, adding modern and circus-themed twists.

The nearly 7,500 square foot Circus House was a labor of love from start to finish. We were surprised by the extensive damage and vandalism from previous ownership, especially to the exterior brickwork. Our first task was addressing this damage.

Our expert masonry team handled the brick tuckpointing, rebuilt the brick archways, and restored the grand front portico entrance and parapet upper wall. We also built a floating stone patio at the front of the home.

Next, we updated the home’s mechanical systems, including plumbing, electrical wiring, gas lines, and a geothermal unit to efficiently heat and cool this massive home. We even increased the ceiling height of the third floor without altering the roof and its beautiful tiles.

Throughout The Circus House renovation and restoration, we salvaged as much as possible to preserve the original character of the home built for Peter Sells and his wife Mary over 100 years ago. Damaged elements were meticulously replicated: we milled new trim and doors and rebuilt mantels.

The main staircase was completely disassembled and rebuilt from treads to banisters. This involved supporting the banister from the ceiling while all balusters, newel posts, and treads were replaced or repaired.

Overall, we renovated and restored five bedrooms, five full baths, two half baths, two kitchens, multiple fireplaces, the pool and surrounding backyard area and detached Carriage House.
